Throughout August, The Institute of Medicine welcomed 15 students from Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Services to their Healthcare Summer School, which involved a journey of learning, cultural exploration and camaraderie. This Summer School marked a significant chapter in the Institute of Medicine’s global outreach programme as it welcomed its first group of students for an immersive summer school experience.
Professor George E Holmes DL DSc, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, welcomed the students and said the University was committed to helping to develop careers in the health sector.
He said: This Medicine Summer School provides a really good insight into how to prepare to secure a place at a UK medical school.
“It teaches clinical skills that allows students to understand the work of a medic, as well as developing confidence in presenting the reason for a career in medicine. “
The journey began with a four-day tour of London, where the students were introduced to famous landmarks including the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and the British Museum.
At the heart of this summer school were healthcare educational workshops. Led by The Institute of Medicines’ highly esteemed faculty members, these workshops covered a diverse range of medical disciplines, which included:
Education went beyond the classroom as the students embarked on a journey through history and culture. Visits to Bolton Wanderers Football Club, the historic City of York and a tour of Manchester City Centre provided a diverse range of experiences that helped to develop their understanding of life in the UK. An action-packed weekend at The Anderton Centre was a firm favourite with the group!
Students commented how ‘warm and friendly’ the UK has been as well as how transformative Summer School had been for their confidence and personal growth. The students presented back to The Institute of Medicine posters which they created based on their Summer School experience. Other notable favourites were the suturing workshops, Faculty members and London landmarks!
The culmination of this summer school was the extravagant Gala evening at the iconic Albert Halls. Amidst esteemed guests and dignitaries, including the deputy mayor of Bolton, the students celebrated the successful end of their Summer School journey and were presented with Certificates of Completion and gifts from the University of Bolton.
Professor George E Holmes DL DSc, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton, said:
He said: “We are passionate about helping people from all over the world to achieve success and delighted to welcome these students from Shanghai – I am sure they have learned much and enjoyed a fantastic experience here in Bolton and visiting other parts of the country during their stay.”
